The joy of cycling on empty roads – Late Spring (Yasujiro Ozu, 1949)

I was asked last month to write a blog post for Goldsmiths press on the ‘current pandemic from the perspective of social, economic and environmental justice’, exploring the idea that we cannot and should not return to ‘life as we know it’ after the catastrophic Covid-19 crisis has been contained.

I wrote a short piece drawing together some thoughts on cycling on empty roads in the UK during the partial lockdown, cinema and avant-garde activist art, which can be found on the Goldsmiths Press website here.

A slightly revised version was published shortly afterwards on the MIT Press Reader here.
